Abstract: Accumulating evidence reveals a close linkage between the central nervous system disorders and the peripheral diseases. It is believed that the “brain-gut axis” mediated inflammatory signal transmission is an important pathway to link the brain disorders and peripheral inflammation. In this review, we discusse the potential mechanisms involved in the inflammatory signal transmission along the “brain-gut axis” and its influence on the subsequently developed neuropsychiatric disorders especially major depression. Also the potential strategies to intervene the inflammatory signal transmission along the “brain-gut axis” for the prevention and treatment of brain disorders are discussed in this paper.
