Abstract: AIM: To study the effect of GM1 ganglioside(GM1)onlearning andmemory disorders in rats with brain radiation.METHODS: 60 rats with brain irradiation byγ-ray at the dosage of 7 Gy·d-1for 6 days, then were divided into 3 groups:20 rats were injected GM1daily (GM1 group),20 rats NS (NS group),and other 20 rats no any treatment (no treatment group).Another 20 rats were set as a normal rat group.Thelearning and memory ability of the rats was measured withMorris water maze, and histopathologic changes were also observed.RESULTS: Thelatency reached toPlatform shortened significantly in GM1 grouPin comparison with NS grouPand the no treatment group, butlonger than normal rat group.ThePercentages of swim distance inPlatform quadrant in GM1 grouPwere higher than those in NS grouPand the no treatment group, butlower than those in the normal rat group.Their histopathologic changes were mitigated in GM1 grouPcompared with NS group.CONCLUSIONS: GM1 ganglioside shows a neuropotective effect onlearning and memory impairment in rats with brain radiation.
