Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a frequent endocrine disorder disease and its etiopathogenesis is still not completely known, which is caused by several factors. In recent years gamma-aminobutyric acid was believed to have something to do with the formation of diabetes mellitus. The glutamic acid decarboxylase, which is one of the earlier autoantigens causing diabetes mellitus, is the synthetase inhibitor of gamma-aminobutyric acid. The relationship of gamma-aminobutyric acid, islets of langerhans and the central nervous system in diabetes mellitus was reviewed in this paper.

Key words: diabetes mellitus, etiopathogenesis, gamma-aminobutyric acid, glutamate decarboxylase
