Abstract: AIM: To investigate the role of NF-κB in apoptosis induced by mistletoe in human colon cancer HCT116 cells.METHODS: The cell growth inhibiting was measured by MTT assay, the cell apoptosis was observed by the agarose gel electrophoresis. The protein expression was detected by Western Blotting. DIG-EMSA was conducted to detemine the DNA-binding activation of NF-κB.RESULTS: Mistletoe had a remarkable growth inhibitory action on HCT116 cells. After exposed to mistletoe, HCT116 cells presented some morphologic features of apoptosis including cell shrinkage, nuclear condensation and DNA fragmentation.NF-κB was inhibited in cancer cells treated with mistletoe.Mistletoe may potentiate the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents such as HCPT.CONCLUSION: Mistletoe may induce apoptosis in HCT116 cell line.Inhibitory action of NF-κB may play a significant role in apoptosis induced by mistletoe.
