Abstract: AIM : To investigate the efficacy of oral administration of polyethylene glycol-electrolyte powder combined with mosapride in bowel preparation before colonoscopy in elderly patients.METHODS: One hundred and sixty-four patients undergoing colonoscopy examination were randomly divided into A, B and C three groups. Before colonoscopy examination, the patient took orally polyethylene glycol-electrolyte powder 2 L in group A , besides method as mentioned above, while the patients in group B took mosapride 10 mg 6.5 hour ago. Besides method as mentioned in group B, the patients in group C took mosapride 5 mg three times a day for 6 days before colonoscopy examination. Then, the time of the first stool, stool frequency, adverse reactions of the patients as well as the quality of the bowel cleanness and so on were recorded and compared.RESULTS:The time of the first stool in group B and C showed earlier than group A with statistical significance (P<0.05), but this was no difference between group B and group C(P>0.05). Compared with the group A and group B, the stool frequency was significantly increased in the group C (P<0.05), but this was no difference between group A and group B(P>0.05).The group C showed a positive efficacy on the quality of the bowel cleanness(P<0.05), whereas this was no difference between group A and group B(P>0.05).CONCLUSION: Compared with single-use polyethylene glycol electrolyte powder and combined with mosapride one time, oral administration of polyethylene glycol-electrolyte powder combined with mosapride for one week before colonoscopy can increase the stool frequency and the quality of the bowel cleanness in elderly patients.
