Abstract:

Tripterygium wilfordii (TW) is a Chinese medicine herb which has been used widely and successfully for centuries in treating immunological disorders and inflammatory diseases. Up to now more than 46 diterpenoids, 20 new triterpenoids, 26 alkaloids and other small molecules have been isolated and identified from this plant. The diterpenoid epoxide triptolide, the quinone triterpene celastrol and the triptolide derivative tripchlorolide are amomg the bioactive compounds of TW with potent anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. This review discusses mechanistic studies into these three bioactive compounds and illustrates their potential clinical use in the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases.
