Abstract: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is usually an affective disorder characterized by anhedonia, cognitive decline, and social disorders. In recent years, some studies have shown that energy metabolism disorder is widespread in chronic stress models and MDD patients. Mitochondria play a central role in energy metabolism and are also involved in the regulation of oxidative stress and cell apoptosis. Thus, the abnormal changes in mitochondrial metabolism may be related to the occurrence of depression. This review summarizes the research progress of mitochondrial energy metabolism involved in the pathogenesis of depression, so as to provide reference for the research of the pathogenesis of depression and new treatment strategies based on mitochondria.
