Abstract: Pharmacogenomics is defined as the study of the association between genetics and drug response. This review includes basic concepts of pharmacogenomics, heterogeneity of hypertension andantihypertensive drug responses, genes associate with drug metabolism, andin-dividualized drug therapy. The knowledge of genes that influence the pharmacodynamic determinants of blood pressure response to antihypertensive medications has the potential to provide new insights not only into molecular mechanisms influencing drug response, but also into the role that these genes may play in determining interindivid-ual differences in blood pressure level and the occurrence of hypertension.

Key words: pharmacogenomics, hypertension, indi-vidualized drug therapy, genetic polymorphism
