Abstract: AIM: To investigate the effects of the Nbutanol fraction from the anomalous fruits of Gleditsia sinensis (NBGS)on allergic rhinitis, and to explore the underlying mechanism of action.METHODS: In sensitized mice with ovalbumin, effects of NBGS on rhinitis symptoms, nasal histamine responsiveness and serum levels of nitric oxide were studied. In sensitized rats, effect of NBGS on the numbers of differential leukocytes in nasal cavity lavage fluid was observed.RESULTS: NBGS (100, 200 mg·kg-1, p.o.)effectively reduced nasal wiping times, nasal hyperresponsiveness and serum levels of nitric oxide in sensitized mice.NBGS also restrained eosinophil effusion of nasal cavity in sensitized rats, but it did not affect the effusion of monocytes and neutrophils.CONCLUSION: NBGS is effective in alleviating the nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, which is probably contributed by lowing nasal hyperresponsiveness and eosinophil infiltration.
