Abstract: Neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are widely distributed in the central nervous system, and they participate in complex neuronal signal transduction and regulation in the brain. The high Ca2+ permeability of nAChRs, plays a pivotal role in shaping nAChRs-induced neuromodulatory effects. The nAChRsmediated Ca2+ signals may regulate diverse neuronal activities such as the improvement of learning and memory, and are closely related to drug addiction or neuroprotection mechanism.

Key words: neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, Ca2+ permeability, signal transduction, neuroprotection
