Abstract: Sodium-coupled monocarboxylate transporters contain two subtypes:SMCT1 and SMCT2. Both of them have similar substrate specificity, but SMCT1 has higher affinity for substrate than SMCT2.SMCT1 and SMCT2 are expressed in intestine, kidney and retina. They maintain physiological function of the tissues by transporting monocarboxylate cooperately. In this paper, the biological characteristics, substrates and inhibitors, tissue distribution and physiological function, as well as actions in drug delivery of SMCT1 and SMCT2 are reviewed.

Key words: sodium-coupled monocarboxylate transporter, biological characteristics, tissue distribution, physiological function, drug delivery
