Abstract: The natriuretic peptides (ANP, BNP and CNP) are a family of related hormones that are secreted by atrium, ventricle or vascular endothelial cells with poten natriuretic, diuretic, vasorelaxant and hypotensive activities. Through combining natriuretic peptide receptors (NPR-A, NPR-B and NPR-C) on target cells, the natriuretic peptides exert an important role in systemic and local homeostasis. As one of the primary target organs of natriuretic peptides, kidney is found to show local mRNA and protein expression of natriuretic peptides and their receptors, forming a local renal natriuretic peptide system. In this paper, major recent developments and their significance of renal natriuretic peptide system are reviewed.
