Abstract: MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) is abundantly expressed in almost all tissues and involved in many diseases. It is reported recently that expression of miR-21 is changed in many cardiovascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and myocardial ischemia. MiR-21 also participates in functional regulation of vascular smooth muscle cells, endothelial cells, cardiac myocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. All these effects of miR-21 are mediated by directing at multiple targets. There are increasing evidence suggesting that miR-21 plays a crucial role in cardiovascular diseases and may be a potential therapeutic target.
