Abstract: Aim This study was designed to evaluate the effect of theophylline on ECG and QEEG map-pong in healthy volunteers and correlation between the effects and the drug level in saliva. Methods The effects of theophylline on ECG and QEEG mapping in healthy volunteers were studied in a double-blind and placebo controlling. Results Two hours after taking theophylline 0. 4g, the amplitude of R wave in ECG rose from 9. 9 ± 2. 8mV to 12. 0 ± 3. 6mV(P < 0. 05); a2 wave power in fp lead and β1 wave power in f3 and f4 leads increased from 1. 05 ± 0. 83 to 2. 08 ± 2. 22(P< 0. 05) and from 1. 75± 1. 35 to 3. 11±3. 51(P<0. 05) respectively; and the theophylline level in saliva was 7. 6 ± 0. 9 pg/ml, existing the correlation between the changes of R wave amplitude and ai wave power and the drug level in saliva (r = 0. 7933 and 0. 8264). Conclusion The experimental results indicated that the theophylline at treatment concentration could cause the changes of ECG and QEEG mapping in healthy volunteers, which was correlation with the level of the freedrug.
